Paint rectification - Paint and Clear Coat Defect Removal

  • No matter how skilled you are or how clean the air in the paint booth is, occasionally there will be the need for some paint rectification.

    Dust nibs, runners or orange peel can be removed with minimum effort required and focus on making the overall compounding and finishing process as fast and efficient as possible.

Todays clear coats can be largely split into two categories


  •  

    • Standard, VOC compliant clear coats, used with different types of hardeners / catalysts (long, short...) which all need to be heat cured / baked.

      These have been state-of-the-art for the last years, they have some "self-healing" properties and are sensitive to temperature from the polishing process. The time span between curing and polishing process has a big influence on the polishing process and behaviour of the clear coat.

    • Very modern, energy saving, super-fast-curing clear coats, that only get air dried.

      Most of these clear coats cure air dry for ca. 30-60 mins (or can be oven dried at ~ 40°C and a shorter time)* Although a fast dry-for-handling time is given, assure you wait the recommended time before you start the polishing process.

Paint rectification - defect removal


Typical clear coat defects are:

Dust nib removal


  • Dust nib removal
    • Remove the dust nib with 3M Paint Defect Removal Abrasives P2500 (or directly P3000) circles or sheets.
    • If you prefer a wet process, alternatively use 3M Finesse-it™ 401Q abrasive circles P2500.
    • Final Step: use Trizact™ Fine Finishing Abrasive Discs 443SA P3000 (machine) to find sand the area and reduce polishing time.

Removal of clear coat runners


  • Step 1

    Manual

    • Use 3M Paint Defect Removal Abrasive Cards P1000 on a block to flatten the runner.
    • Remove/ refine the sanding scratches from P1000 with a P2000 3M Paint Defect Removal Abrasive Card.
    • Final Step: use Trizact™ Fine Finishing Abrasive Discs 443SA P3000 (machine) to fine sand the area and reduce polishing time.
  • Step 1

    By Machine

    • Remove the runner by using 3M™ Hookit™ Finishing Film Abrasive Disc 260L+, grade P1200, available in 76 mm.
    • Final Step: use Trizact™ Fine Finishing Abrasive Discs 443SA P3000 (machine) to fine sand the area and reduce polishing time.

Orange peel removal:

    Step 1

    Larger defects are removed by using 3M™ 260L Fine Finishing Discs P1200/1500. Use with 3M™ Hookit™ Soft Interface Pad on a suitable machine.

    Final Step: use Trizact™ Fine Finishing Abrasive Discs 443SA P3000 (machine) to fine sand the area and reduce polishing time.
